Why Are You Doing That?


According to Simon Sinek, it’s not what we do or how we do it that matters: it’s WHY we do it that’s most important.   Sinek asserts that people (our patients) don’t buy what we do, they buy why we do it.

With that in mind, shouldn’t we be prepared to tell our patients WHY we open the doors of our practice everyday?  To do that, we each need to ask ourselves, WHY we do what we do. Can you easily answer that question, apart from the obvious need to earn a living?  Could you explain to a patient WHY you are a Dentist or Dental Hygienist, Assistant or Administrator?

Sinek believes that we define ourselves by our WHY!  Lots of people do what we do, but it’s our individual WHY that sets us apart.  It all comes down to being authentic; and therefore worthy of trust, reliance or belief’.  Being authentic means that you actually say and do what you believe.  You live your WHY!

In fact Sinek goes so far as to say that people (patients) need to know our WHY before they can trust us.

What we say and do demonstrates what we believe and what we value!  When we share what we believe and value with our patients, and the patient has similar beliefs and values, trust is a natural result.  And, patients who trust us will refer others.
